New project to protect birds in Cuba might interest those on tour of Havana

Wed, 28 Jul 2010

A new project is underway to help protect the winged creatures in Cuba, those on a tour of Havana might be interested to hear.

The Important Bird Areas (IBAs) directory has been created with a view to conserving the animal's population, Birdlife International has reported.

Habitat disturbance, invasive species and unsustainable exploitation like hunting pursuits have threatened the wildlife on the Caribbean island.

The report has been published in association with Birdlife International, the Canadian Wildlife Service and the British Birdwatching Fair, the website points out.

Photographs of the feathered critters have been captured by 18 professionals and 34 authors have contributed knowledge to the cause.

Susana Aguilar, Cuban IBA programme co-ordinator at the National Centre for Protected Areas, said: "We now have an excellent opportunity to use [the information] to leverage major commitments from policy makers, the scientific community, protected areas managers and sponsors."

Creatures native to the Cook Islands have also been subject to a similar scheme, thanks to a grant from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund.ADNFCR-2568-ID-19911290-ADNFCR
